This
exposed aggregate surfacing technique is popular for driveways at country
estates because it allows the durability and strength of asphalt while
affording the refined rural character of exposed aggregate. Two types
of aggregate are available locally, 3/8" river gravel pea stone
and 3/8" crushed ledge stone.
The
full process involves grading and paving of a base layer of hot mix
asphalt pavement. After a 60 day curing period for the pavement a spray
coating of liquid emulsified asphalt is applied to the surface. Pea
gravel or crushed stone is then spread and compacted so that the emulsified
asphalt cements it to the underlying pavement. Commonly a loose layer
of stone is left on the surface that works as a cushion so that vehicle
tires do not pull the cemented stones loose.
