Blaktop, Inc. is a family owned and operated asphalt paving business headquartered in West Lebanon, NH. The company was founded in 1950 by the owners of Twin State Sand & Gravel Co. as an additional outlet for their sand and stone products.

Asphalt paving in 1950 was just beginning to become popular as a road surfacing material. Its ease of installation and low cost made it the preferable choice during the growth era after WWII. Especially in the Northeast where frost, moisture and varying soils combine to cause problems for pavements, asphalt with its resilient and flexible nature became and remains the number one choice. When it opened for business Blaktop had the only hot mix asphalt production facility in its region.

William “Bill” Taylor was one of the original owners of Twin State Sand & Gravel Co. Thompson Close began working for Mr. Taylor shortly after Blaktop was established and took over most of the accounting and sales responsibilities while Mr. Taylor focused on operations in the field. Taylor’s original business partners eventually left the business and Mr. Close worked his way into an ownership position with Mr. Taylor to replace them. The two co-owned and managed the companies through the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s . Mr. Taylor passed away in 1980 and Mr. Close in 1989. The two companies now in their second generation of family ownership continue the principles that Bill Taylor and Tom Close stood for: Integrity in all our dealings Quality in all our products Dependability in all our commitments Safety in all our activities Standing by these principles has fostered a loyalty of both customers and employees. The average length of stay for year round employees is 16 years. Customers can trust in the experience and wealth of knowledge that our people bring to their job.

From modest beginnings Blaktop and Twin State Sand & Gravel now play an important role in the region’s economy. They employ approximately 65 people during the construction season and utilize a fleet of over 75 vehicles and pieces of equipment. Additional facilities include 2 asphalt plants in West Lebanon and aggregate processing facilities in West Lebanon and at the Twin State quarry site in Hartland, Vermont.
